Sitz Baths for Postpartum Healing

A sitz bath is a simple and soothing way to support postpartum recovery. It involves sitting in warm, shallow water infused with healing herbs, helping to ease discomfort, promote healing, and reduce swelling after birth. Whether you’ve had a vaginal birth or a cesarean, a sitz bath can be a gentle self-care ritual to nurture your body in those early weeks.

How to Use a Sitz Bath

You can prepare a sitz bath in a bathtub or a basin. Steep the herbs in hot water (for the sample received at the Negenmaandenbeurs, use 500-750ml of boiling water, like you would steep herbs for making tea) in a covered vessel for 15–20 minutes. Then strain, and add the infusion to bathwater or basin water. Ensure the bathing temperature is about 34-36 degrees or cooler. Cool water will help against swelling and hemorrhoid discomfort.

DO NOT BATHE IN VERY HOT WATER!!

Soak for 10–20 minutes, up to twice a day, for relief and healing.

Healing Herbs for Sitz Baths

Each herb in this blend has been chosen for its soothing and restorative properties:

  • Calendula (Goudsbloem – Calendula officinalis) – Gentle on sensitive skin, calendula supports tissue repair and soothes irritation.

  • Chamomile (Kamille – Matricaria chamomilla) – A calming anti-inflammatory that reduces redness and promotes relaxation.

  • Plantain (Weegbree – Plantago major) – Naturally antimicrobial, it aids in wound healing and relieves itching or irritation.

  • Yarrow (Duizendblad – Achillea millefolium) – Known for its astringent properties, yarrow helps reduce swelling and supports circulation.

  • Lavender (Lavendel – Lavandula hybrida) – A classic for relaxation, lavender also has antibacterial and wound-healing benefits.

  • Witch Hazel (Toverhazelaar – Hamamelis virginiana) – A powerful astringent that soothes soreness and reduces inflammation.

  • Thyme (Tijm – Thymus vulgaris) – Antibacterial and antifungal, thyme keeps the healing process clean and supports tissue repair.

Taking time to care for yourself after birth is just as important as caring for your baby. A sitz bath with these herbs is a simple but powerful way to ease into recovery with warmth, comfort, and natural healing.

While generally safe, always check in with your midwife or gp before using, especially with open wounds.

WHEN IN DOUBT, ALWAYS CONTACT YOUR GP OR MIDWIFE!

Third Trimester Tea (from week 34 on)

Raspberry Leaf Tea for the End of Pregnancy

Raspberry leaf tea is a well-loved herbal ally for the final weeks of pregnancy, traditionally used to tone the uterus and support a smoother labor. Rich in vitamins and minerals, it helps prepare the body for birth while offering a gentle, nourishing ritual for expecting mothers.

When and How to Drink It

It’s generally considered safe to start drinking raspberry leaf tea around week 34–36 of pregnancy, beginning with one cup per day and gradually increasing to two or three cups if well-tolerated. Some midwives recommend stopping at the onset of labor, while others encourage drinking it throughout. Always check with your care provider if you’re unsure.

Blending for Taste and Benefits

On its own, raspberry leaf tea has an earthy, slightly astringent flavor. Adding a touch of rose petals enhances the taste with a light floral sweetness, making it more enjoyable. Chamomile brings a calming effect, helping to ease tension and promote relaxation, while a bit of spearmint adds a refreshing note and supports digestion.

The Benefits
  • Uterine Toning – Strengthens the uterus, potentially leading to more effective contractions.

  • Nutrient-Rich – Provides iron, magnesium, and calcium to support pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

  • May Shorten Labor – Some studies suggest it can help shorten the second stage of labor.

  • Supports Digestion & Relaxation – Chamomile and spearmint ease bloating, nausea, and stress.

Sipping a warm cup of this herbal blend is a lovely way to connect with your body and prepare for birth—one sip at a time.
