Yoni steaming, an ancient practice with roots in various cultures, is gaining popularity for its potential to support women’s reproductive health. As a doula, I often encourage women to explore holistic practices that nurture their bodies and connect them with their intuition during pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond. Yoni steaming is one such practice that can offer healing, comfort, and empowerment.

What is Yoni Steaming?

Yoni steaming involves sitting or squatting over a bowl of warm herbal steam. The steam gently rises through the vaginal area, allowing the herbs to be absorbed by the tissues, offering a range of potential benefits. The herbs used in the steam vary but often include plant-based ingredients like mugwort, rosemary, lavender, and calendula, known for their soothing and healing properties.

While the practice may seem new to some, it has been used for centuries in cultures across the world, including in South Korea, Mexico, and parts of Africa. As a doula, I recommend that women consider yoni steaming as a part of a holistic wellness routine, particularly during pregnancy and postpartum.

Yoni Steaming During Pregnancy: A Gentle Approach

During pregnancy, the body undergoes significant physical changes. Yoni steaming can support a sense of relaxation and overall well-being, but it’s important to approach it with caution. Pregnant women should always consult with their healthcare provider before trying any new health practices, including yoni steaming.

While some practitioners advocate for the benefits of yoni steaming during pregnancy, it’s generally recommended to avoid steaming during the first trimester, as the practice may stimulate uterine contractions. After the first trimester, gentle steaming can promote relaxation, alleviate pelvic tension, and support emotional balance. Herbs such as rose petals, lavender, and chamomile are often recommended due to their mild and soothing properties.

Yoni steaming can be a wonderful way for pregnant women to nurture themselves and create space for introspection and self-care. As a doula, I encourage expecting mothers to stay connected to their intuition and listen to their bodies to determine if yoni steaming is a good fit for them.

Yoni Steaming After Birth:
Supporting the Postpartum Journey

The postpartum period is a time of immense transformation. As a doula, I know how important it is to honor the healing process of the body and spirit after birth. Yoni steaming can be a soothing practice to help with physical recovery and emotional well-being after childbirth.

The herbs used in postpartum yoni steams can support healing of the perineal area, reduce inflammation, and balance hormonal fluctuations. Steaming can also encourage the body to release any remaining blood or tissue from the uterus, aiding in the restoration of the body’s natural balance.

Yoni steaming after birth can help women reconnect with their bodies in a loving and nurturing way. It’s important, however, that women wait until their bleeding has stopped completely before steaming. If there are any concerns about infection or complications, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before trying this practice.

As part of the closing the bones ceremony, I offer yoni steaming in the comfort of your own home. This ceremony is designed to support emotional and physical healing after childbirth, helping mothers feel grounded and nurtured. I bring a special stool and a prepared herbal mix tailored to your needs, making it a deeply personal and restorative experience.

General Use of Yoni Steaming:
A Holistic Wellness Practice

Outside of pregnancy and postpartum, yoni steaming can be a valuable practice for general reproductive health. Regular steaming may help regulate menstrual cycles, ease menstrual cramps, reduce symptoms of pelvic tension, and promote emotional wellness. The gentle warmth of the steam combined with the therapeutic properties of the herbs can bring relief to women experiencing discomfort, stress, or emotional imbalances.

As a doula, I believe that yoni steaming can serve as a powerful tool for self-care, allowing women to cultivate mindfulness and self-awareness. The practice creates an opportunity to slow down and focus on the body’s signals, helping to release stored emotions and tension. It’s a moment of reconnection to the feminine energy, which can be particularly helpful during times of change or stress.

How to Practice Yoni Steaming Safely

To practice yoni steaming at home, start by preparing your herbs and hot water. Use a bowl or basin that’s comfortable for you to sit over. Add hot water (not boiling) and the herbs of your choice, and then position yourself over the bowl, allowing the steam to rise to your yoni. Be mindful of the temperature to avoid burns, and always check with your provider if you’re unsure about any health conditions that could affect your ability to steam safely.

Yoni steaming can be a beautiful and healing practice when done with intention and care. Whether you’re pregnant, postpartum, or simply looking for a way to nurture your body and soul, this ancient practice can offer a sense of peace and empowerment.
