Birth Basics-
Childbirth preparation with no overwhelm
There has never been more information available about birth — and that doesn't necessarily make preparing for it easier. Research, recommendations, birth stories, professional opinions and an endless stream of social media content can quickly leave you wondering what you actually need to know.
Birth Basics was created to give you a solid foundation without asking you to become an expert in childbirth.
We look at the bigger picture: the physiology of pregnancy, labour and birth; what may happen as labour unfolds; practical ways of coping; the choices and interventions you may encounter; the role of the birth partner; and what to expect in the postnatal period.
The course is both holistic and science-based. We look at the body and the evidence, but also at mindset, emotions and the transition into parenthood.
At its heart is an approach I come back to throughout my work: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Knowledge and your Inner Wisdom — bringing together what we understand about birth, what generations before us have known and, importantly, your own intuition and understanding of yourself.
Birth Basics- Extras
If an induction has been recommended or scheduled, you may want more time to understand what the process can look like and the decisions you may meet along the way.
The Induction Masterclass can be added to Birth Basics for more focused preparation. We go deeper into the induction process, the different methods that may be offered, what happens at each stage, your options and how you and your partner can prepare for an induced labour.
Induction Preparation

Baby Care Preparation
More than understanding birth — preparing your body and mind for it
HypnoBirthing®-
The Mongan Method
Prepare for the part that comes after birth
HypnoBirthing® is for parents who want to go deeper into their birth preparation and, importantly, have time to practise.
Over five sessions, you learn about the physiology of birth and the relationship between body and mind, while developing practical skills in breathing, deep relaxation, visualisation and self-hypnosis. Repetition is an important part of the method, allowing these techniques to become familiar long before labour begins.
It is a complete childbirth education programme as well as a method of preparing mentally and physically for birth, giving you knowledge, practical tools and a practice you can carry with you into labour.
Postpartum Planning
Preparing for life with your newborn
Preparing for a baby is not only about knowing how to change a nappy or give a bath. It is also about beginning to understand what newborn babies are like, what they need, and how they communicate before they have words.
Baby Care Preparation covers the practical side of caring for a newborn alongside feeding, sleep, crying, soothing, safety and normal newborn behaviour. We also look at how babies communicate through their cues, and how you can begin to recognise and respond to the baby in front of you rather than trying to follow a fixed set of rules.
The aim is not to make you feel that you should know everything before your baby arrives, but to give you a useful foundation so that those first days feel a little less unfamiliar.
So much preparation goes into birth, while the days and weeks that follow are often left to figure out once the baby is already here.
Postpartum Planning gives you time to think ahead about recovery, rest, feeding, support, visitors, practical responsibilities and what you might need from the people around you. We also talk about expectations — of yourself, your partner and those first weeks with your baby — and where reality may look different from what you imagined.
The aim is not to plan every detail of life with a newborn. It is to have the important conversations before you are tired, recovering from birth and learning to care for a new baby all at once.
Birth Basics or HypnoBirthing®?
Both courses offer comprehensive, evidence-informed preparation for birth, but they approach it differently.
Birth Basics was created around a different idea of what the “basics” of childbirth education should be. Rather than trying to teach you everything there is to know about birth, we focus on the most useful understanding: how your body works, the landscape of labour and birth, how to make informed decisions, the role of your partner, and how to navigate things when birth takes a different direction.
The course is broad and practical, with extensive handouts and my book, The Last-Minute Guide to Labour and Childbirth, giving you the option to explore subjects in more depth in your own time.
HypnoBirthing® takes a different approach. Across five sessions, childbirth education is combined with a much stronger focus on the connection between body and mind and on developing a practice. Breathing, deep relaxation, visualisation and self-hypnosis are learned and repeated over time, so that the techniques become familiar before labour begins.
Choose Birth Basics if you want to understand the foundations that really matter, have practical tools for different kinds of birth, and explore additional information at your own pace.
Choose HypnoBirthing® if you want a longer programme with more emphasis on relaxation, mindset and developing techniques through repeated practice.
